Becoming an Eagle by Flora Fong

A Graphic Memoir: An immigrant's quest for love, travel, food, and identity in the United States

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A HONG KONG GIRL MOVES TO THE UNITED STATES:

Follow Flora's journey of falling in love with a foreign man, her grief of moving away from her hometown, and her finding acceptance and a sense of home in America. Flora unravels the layers of emotions of relocating three times in a decade — from being a Hong Kong city girl to experiencing the gentle warmth and hospitality of Minnesota Nice, later adapting to the laid-back island life of Maui, Hawaii, and eventually readjusting back to Hong Kong.

In her endearing voice and her humorous comics, Flora presents an honest story of being an immigrant in America: the desire to fit in, the resilience to try new things, the humbleness to start from the bottom, and the joy of pursuing the American Dream by starting her own business.

By the final page, you will feel more curious about other cultures and more courageous knowing that starting over can lead to belonging — wherever you are.

Becoming An Eagle: Immigrant Story Becoming An Eagle, Graphic Memoir, Book

Reviews

“This book would make a wonderful gift for anyone in transition to a new country, for someone navigating intercultural relationships, or for immigrants and third-culture kids learning to find their place in unfamiliar spaces. It’s also an eye-opening read for American audiences who want to better understand and celebrate the stories of those around them. Flora doesn’t just tell her story. She helps others feel seen through it."

"Reading Flora Fong’s “Becoming an Eagle” as an American living in Hong Kong made me laugh, cry, and get hit with a serious case of homesickness — but also reminded me why I love Hong Kong so much. Flora’s honest and funny take on immigrant life had me nodding at the awkward culture shocks, missing certain foods and wide-open spaces, yet appreciating the fast-paced energy and deep connection I’ve built here. It’s like she captured the best and weirdest of both worlds, from Minnesota nice to Maui chill to Hong Kong hustle.

Her comics and stories are straightforward and easy to relate to, showing how living between two homes can feel confusing and overwhelming, but also teach you to find your own path. Definitely a constant existential dilemma to be away from family and friends but also simultaneously want to explore the world.

This book is great if you want a laugh, a little nostalgia, and a warm reminder that wherever you are, you can find a place to belong — even if it means sometimes missing your favorite pizza place or longing for dim sum!

If you’re an expat or just love quirky tales about chasing the American Dream and figuring out what “home” means, “Becoming an Eagle” will hit you right in the feels — with a smile and maybe some happy tears too. Flora has captured the best elements about why I love Hong Kong and their people, as well as reminding me the positive elements of USA and their people. Definitely a fun, refreshing read with heart."

“A genuinely touching story that manages to encapsulate the experience of an immigrant in a way that is devoid of sarcasm and is plainly enjoyable to read. The photos and illustrations are adorable and surprisingly enlightening.  The protagonist is very likable because she is a woman of action who just goes out and tries new things.”

"A fun and relatable read for intercultural relationships!

Becoming an Eagle is a heartfelt and engaging read that I absolutely loved. Flora's storytelling felt both funny and genuine. As someone who understands the dynamics of a mixed relationship, I found the book especially relatable-it captures the humor, challenges, and beauty of blending cultures in a really authentic way.

What stood out most to me was how seamlessly she wove personal growth, love, and travel together. The journey felt adventurous yet down-to-earth, reminding me how transformative relationships and new places can be."
